Mori Bhi Rung Do Chunariya.....!


وہ ازل سے فقير جو مقامِ گدائی نہ جيت پائے
يہ وسعتِ زيست کس قدر بيکار مسافت ہو جائے

ہو جتنا اک مفلس کا مکاں، جب کاسۂ دل خالی ہو جائے
خودی کے شيش محل کا اسير، گيان و گمان ہو جائے

تمام عمر کی رياضت جب اک کارِ زياں ہو جائے
مانگنے کو ہاتھ اٹھأيں اور صوت بے بياں ہو جائے

جھولی پھيلأيں اور دامن صرف چھيد رہ جائے
اندر جو بستا ہو روہی، اشک کہاں سے آئے

کيا ستم ہو کہ سوالی خود بھی ديکھ پائے
نفس کی وہ ہر سياہی جو ہر دعا کو نگل جائے


Wo azl say faqeer, jo muqaam-e-gadaee na jeet paey, 
ye wussat-e-zeest kis qadar bekar musafat ho jaey....

ho jitna ik muflis ka makaan, jab kasaa-e-dil khali ho jaey .....
khudi kay sheesh mehal ka aseer, gayyaan-o-gumaan ho jaey....

tamaam umr ki ryazat, jab ik kaar-e-zayyan ho jaey ....
maangnay ko haath uthain, aur soat bay-bayan ho jaey.... 

jholi phailaen aur daman sirf chhaid reh jaey...
ander jo basta ho roohi, ashk kahan say aaey...

kia sitam ho kay sawali khud bhi daikh paey...
nafs ki wo sab siyahi, jo har dua ko nigal jaey....





Just some random blabbering! Has nothing to the do with the great kalam shared in the clips underneath, except for the sense of ...."mori bhi rung do chunariya..."

  3. I don't know who adopted Meera's bhajan as a devotional qawwali, but whoever it was, they did a great job!

    Obviously the main theme is the same: it is sung from the point of view of a woman (Mira) who asks (metaphorically) for:
    (1) mori rang do chunariya
    (color my scarf)
    (2) aisi rang de ke rang nahi choote
    (so the color doesn't come out)
    (3) dhobiya dooye chahe ye sari umariya.
    (even if the washerman washes it his whole life.)

    The most obvious change is that Mira's bhajan is sung for Shyam, whereas the qawwali is sung for Baba.

    But this is what is amazing: Nusratji actually sings (38 seconds into part 2)

    bal bal jauon tori kishan murari
    phir se bajaun bansuria
    baba mei tori puja karungi


    And of course Shyam (kishan) is quite famous for his bansuria (flute). So with this stanza Nusratji (or whichever poet first adopted the bhajan) pays homage to Mirabai's original intention for the poem.

    The qawwali does add a few new stanzas not found in the original (such as drinking matva), which are metaphors not commonly used in bhajans, but of course very common in qawwalis.

    All in all, it's wonderful to see that devotion can be so universal. For in the end, no matter which version of the Ultimate Inspiration the prayer is sung for, the music remains divine.

  5. "sanson ki mala pe" is too special for me for a couple of reasons. Thanks for sharing it, for I wouldn't have shared it on this blog... :) kabhi laga nahi kay attachment justify ho paey gi :)
