For 2014, My Last Ramzan Post

Every year Ramzan rings in with a definite promise of some value addition to life. Despite various personal failings, it's purely by His Divine Grace, that one does feel enriched by the time the yearly affair of showering blessings is over.

The ritual of going through Quran as a user manual is generally more intense during this month, and at times this earnest ardor to grasp the essence pays off as the Scripture opens to us in ways other than her usual self.
The interesting fact is, that even after a millenium and a half, Quran is still a veiled beauty. There is always more, more and still more to be understood; more depth to be fathomed.
During my growing years I'd always be intrigued when my mother would talk about a verse that inspired some new meanings to her. Considering that I had always seen her as a daily Quran reciter, it used to amaze me. 'She reads this Book daily, why is there room still to amuse her?' I'd think in my heart.
After all these years, I think I'm beginning to understand why did the Divine choose this Scripture to accompany His most beloved It is an infinite Source.

This year, it was verse 3 from Surah Baqrah that graciously granted a newer perspective to my take on life and relationships.

A very simple, short verse, it forms a preface of the condition that makes the beneficiaries of Quran stand out. It says:

TRANSLATION:

(by Yusuf Ali)
Who believe in the Unseen, are steadfast in prayer, and spend out of what We have provided for them;

(by Muhammad Asad)
who believe in [the existence of] that which is beyond the reach of human perception, and are constant in prayer, and spend on others out of what We provide for them as sustenance;

Now, for me the interpretation of the two words "Al-ghayb" and "Ar-rizq" has been the discovery.
The discovery of Al-ghayb induces a sense of humbleness because one must submit to one's given limitation in defining the ultimate reality. Man, as composed of five finite senses, can not make a claim upon penetrating the Infinite. Just can not.
Ar-rizq, on the other hand, opened new vistas to realize how limited our perception of "rizq" is!
There are times when one goes through a sense of starvation; not physical but intellectual or/and emotional starvation. Are you familiar with that sensation?

"The Message of the Quran" by Muhammad Asad explains the two terms as follows.

May we all believe in which is beyond the reach of human perception, and be constant in prayer, and spend on others out of what Allah provides for us as sustenance. Ameen!

Ramzan. Iftars. Preferences.

While Quran assures us that the month of Ramzan (or Ramadan, if you so prefer), has been decreed as a strict training regimen,

O ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed to you as it was prescribed to those before you, that ye may (learn) self-restraint,-

We've done a brilliant job of morphing it into a month of food gala activities and iftar parties. Every year its this month when the phrase "All You Can Eat" hits the society with a 4 digit price tag, and we all go bonkers. Hurray!

A few days back I came across a status at a public platform which looked like this:

Fundamentally, there's nothing wrong with celebrating food, or spending upon it as lavishly as one's pocket permits, or even instagramming the food you think the rest of the world has no clue about!
What is wrong is the very idea that you *think* you're fasting while you plan a Rs 2000+tax individual meal when a haunting count of people going to bed at an empty stomach in the same city, could have been fed within the same amount. Whatever happened to the idea of fearing God, of self restraint?

I realize its not my place to dictate you my definitions of right and wrong, however, I'll be thoroughly grateful if you find it another perspective over a month we could, and should, benefit from.

As a parting note, let me share a relevant fact: Iftar meal for a group of 4 at any place in Gulberg costs +/- Rs. 7000.

Meanwhile,  SOS Children's Village says: The amount for complete sponsorship of a child is Rs. 10000 US $100 per month. Partial sponsorship amount for one child, is Rs. 5000 US $50 per month.

In addition, you can transform a life: pay for a child's entire year's schooling in Rs. 15,000, by contributing to TCF.

May Allah enable us all to reap the blessings of this month to the fullest, amen.

Ramzan Ramzain

Some random musings during the last few weeks, compiled here ...

Tamed fears make good steeds to fancy's flight.

Smooth sailing is not meant for grandeurous shores.

Keeping dignity is an inside job.

Don't settle for a mediocre relationship with Allah!

In the tradition of lovers, no one recognizes another's seal of kiss. Each wants his own seal...

If a shell can hold within and transform a salty water droplet to a precious pearl, imagine what can your heart do!

Making friends or picking foes, one must never look below.

Genuinity kay musallas kay teen konay hain: Aik Allah. Aik maa. Aik apna aap. The holy trinity!

If you have a song, don't hold it in wait of Spring.

Moments of absolute void come with the most promising possibilities of fulfillment.

Stop those who kill in the name of sect. No God sells Jannah against the blood of innocents.

Funerals are the best courses to learn about life.

1st rule of an argument:
If you find the need to go personal to prove your point, your argument is null and void. Maybe so is the idea.

When you carve your gods, don't forget your divine dust.

One's aura is an offshoot of one's thoughts.

No seeker sets out to search, save the one who already has the Treasure.

Isn't it a fact that our quick, instant-mixture, life recipe has robbed us of the pleasure of real food for thought?

Hisaab-e Umr Ka Goshwara

Was going through my just received Bank statement document and it struck me strong ... Hamaray hisaab-e umr ka bhi aik aisa hi goshwara ho ga: Credits, Debits, Balance.

What a spine chilling thought - every word, every decision, EVERY action is a transaction being documented under either of the two columns: Credits or Debits!
There's nothing, N.o.t.h.i.n.g. that goes unnoticed. Nada!

Do you see how serious is this??

Thinking of the credits I made today.

And debits!

Khudaya, rehm kun bar mun!

Rescue

Abu Ya ‘la Dailami and Ibn Asakir narrated: Abu Hurairah and Anas Ibn Malik said: Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) said:

"Allah loves rescuing the one who needs rescue."

... Thus.

If you are ingrate- behold, God has no need of you; none the less, He does not approve of ingratitude in His servants: whereas, if you show gratitude, He approves it in you.

YOU, Of All The World

You I choose, of all the world, alone;
Will you suffer me to sit in grief?
My heart is as a pen in your hand,
You are the cause if I am glad or melancholy.
Save what you will, what will have I?
Save what you show, what do I see?
You make grow out of me now a thorn and now a rose;
Now I smell roses and now pull thorns.
If you keep me that, that I am;
If you would have me this, I am this.
In the vessel where you give color to the soul
Who am I, what is my love and hate?
You were first, and last you shall be;
Make my last better than my first.
When you are hidden, I am of the infidels;
When you are manifest, I am of the faithful.
I have nothing, except you have bestowed it;
What do you seek from my bosom and sleeve?

Then when thou hast decided upon a course of action, place thy trust in God: for verily, God loves  those who place their trust in Him.

3:159 Al Quran

And yet after all this, your hearts hardened and became like rocks or even harder: for, behold, there are rocks from which streams gush forth; and, behold, there are some from which, when they are cleft, water issues; and, behold, there are some that fall down for awe of God, and God is not unmindful of what you do!

Either Black, Or White

A blob of blood,
A fist of clay
thats all in a bosom with Fire nay!

A heart aflame,
A chest ablaze
is the find of a lover's maze

The moth that seeks
finds the Torch
whirls around
with passion bound
kindled by the light of Love
till is an ash mound

How could it not be,
for a heart to love Thee!
when even a moth knows
of melting for pure glee..

A heart that throbs
and is charred of Love;
Burns with desire,
and speaks of Love;
Yearns for the Lord,
and believes of Love;
is the heart alone
that belongs to Love.

In a bosom with Fire nay,
its a blob of blood
a fist of clay.

[Never had God endowed any man with two hearts in one body.]

Fida-E-Naqsh-E-Nalainat Kunam Ja. Ya Rasul Allah!

Tanam Farsooda jaa para
Ze Hijra Ya Rasul Allah
Dillam Paz Murda Aawara
Ze Isyaa. Ya Rasul Allah

My body is dissolving in your separation
And my soul is breaking into pieces. Ya Rasul Allah!
Due to my sins, My heart is weak and becoming enticed. Ya Rasul Allah!

Choon Soo’e Mun Guzar Aari
Manne Miskeen Zanaa Daari
Fida-E-Naqsh-E-Nalainat
Kunam Ja. Ya Rasul Allah!

When you pass by me
Then even in my immense poverty, ecstatically,
I must sacrifice my soul on your blessed sandal. Ya Rasul Allah!

Ze Jaame Hubb Tu Mustam
Ba Zanjeere Tu Dil Bustam
Nu’mi Goyam Ke Mun Bustum
Sukun Daa. Ya Rasul Allah

I am drowned in the taste of your love
And the chain of your love binds my heart.
Yet I don’t say that I know this language (of love). Ya Rasul Allah

Ze Kharda Khaish Hairaanam
Siyaa Shud Roze Isyaanam
Pashemaanam, Pashemaanam, Pashemaanam. Ya Rasul Allah

I am worried due to my misdeeds;
And I feel that my sins have blackened my heart. Ya Rasul Allah!
I am in distress! I am in distress! I am in distress! Ya Rasul Allah!

Choon Baazoo’e Shafaa’at Raa
Khushaa’I Bar Gunaagara
Makun Mahruume Jaami Raa
Daraa Aan. Ya Rasul Allah

When you spread your hands to intercede for the sinners,
Then do not deprive Jaami of your exalted intercession.

The Sham Seeking

With the two third of Ramadan almost over already, there are so many things that threaten to be a spoiler as concerns seeking 'maghfirrat'.

How can one seek Forgiveness, when one can not forgive?

How can one want Mercy when all that one keeps storing is vitriol?

How can one aspire to soak in the torrents of unleashed Grace when one holds back each time one gets a chance to grant a pardon?

How can one be genuine in one's pleadings at the Court, when one does not understand the power of granting?

How can one expect the Answer to an anguished heart, when one hasn't ever surrendered one's own self?

How can one!!!

Not that having done so one could have ensured the Desired.
Its not a deal. Its not a pact.
Its part of understanding the process of prayer. The sacredness of it. The loftiness of it.
Its submitting to its grandeur.

Its the criterion to be genuine to one's own self.

If I Adore You

If I adore You out of fear of Hell,
Burn me in Hell!
If I adore You out of desire for Paradise,
Lock me out of Paradise.
But if I adore You for Yourself alone
Do not deny to me Your eternal Beauty

Rabia Al-Basri

Of Virtue of Hope And Vice of Despair

The dream had the back ground orchestra of generous rain showers bating at the windows. As she woke up she could still feel the anxiety knotted at the pit of her stomach like she experienced in her dream while explaining the need to deviate from the path of Logic to that of Love. She didnt remember whom she was talking to, she didnt really remember what she was talking either. The only thing she remembered of the dream was the gushing sound of the rain and an overflowing fountain in her heart.

She woke up with a taste of fear in her mouth. Could she be wrong? Could it all be futile? I mean, all over again! Her fingers trembled as she beat her coffee while her eyes looked around as if in an attempt to grope something physical to hang on to, to feel secure. Assured.

And suddenly the assurance hit, like an answered prayer! 'What is it that you seek assurance for?' Her heart asked her doubtful mind. 'Are you not content with the Love alone that asks you to be firm?', it whispered. Her hand ceased its brisk movement and she chewed on it for a while. Setting the mug aside, she moved to the stove, fiddled with its knobs, all the while replaying the question in her head, trying to be sure of her answer when she comes up with one. After all, for many questions its not the promptness of the answer but the understanding of the question itself and the conviction with which the reply comes, that makes it reliable.
And she so gravely needed her reply to be reliable, for her own sake if not for anyone else's. She needed her mind to be sure when it picks up the line of her heart. Why wouldn't she? For, synchrony, she thought, is Freedom.

It didn't take eons. The reason returned. With a reply that made her heart smile.
It was no theory of self annihilation that a heart could pride in; neither was it the idea of a premise that didn't permit the interference of the mind. It was a kind a vision, a vision that seemed to last only a few moments but profound like an experience of life. A short clip of a movie that she watched through her mental eye as she stood there in her kitchen in those early morning hours with a half made mug of coffee on the counter, and a stove turned on.

It was the hall of a beautifully architectured masjid. The plain white ceiling was high, with a golden chandelier hanging through the single doom in its middle. Red Persian carpets spread across the hall to the other end where the yellow stream of light seemed to penetrate into its calming shade through the series of arched windows in the wall. The ambiance spoke of tranquil and silence. A brightly sunny courtyard offered the entrance into the hall, which at the moment was empty. A man appeared at the main entrance and put off his shoes, as is the custom while entering for prayers in a mosque. Leaving his shoes there, he moved in and a little short of the center of the hall, he stopped and bent down to prostrate in prayer. There were two clothed bundles with him that he placed in front of him. The bundles were tied with big crude knots, and their greyish white cloth seemed rough in texture.
Suddenly a sentinel came. A guard, whose baton seemed to provide the only view of him. With one strong move of the baton, the sentinel hurled both the bundles out of the mosque and they dropped exactly where the man had put off his shoes at the entrance.
"When you come in here to SEEK", the sentinel admonished, "leave your vice and virtue out. Its not a worship of your goodness and sins!"

The coffee turned out to be gratifyingly delicious.
