I wasn't like this before.......

Believe me
I wasn’t always like this
Lacking common sense
Or looking insane

Like you
I used to be clever
In my days

Never like this
Totally enraptured
Totally gone

Like sharp shooters
I used to be
A hunter of hearts

Not like today
With my own heart
Drowning in its blood

Nonstop asking and
Searching for answers
That was then

But now
So deeply enchanted
So deeply enthralled

Always pushing
To be ahead and above
Since i was not yet hunted down
By this
Ever-increasing love

Carve me out into mould of yours O love!

The following qawwali by Ameer Khusro has an almost haunting feel to it, or perhaps the way Shafqat Amanat Ali's vocals have rendered it that 'soze' has added to that magical effect. I am not into Khusro's poetry. At times despite grasping the concept, the idea of lover and beloved as he presents, becomes too knotty for me.

However, I just fell for this one. The yearning, the longing, the desire is so strong, so potent that it hardly leaves any margin for not falling a prey to those gutsy torrents of love showering down upon one's entire being.

Translating it was the closest thing I felt I could do to immerse in those blinding showers of intoxicating pure love. I so wish I could do better with this for this deserves to be treated so.

Mohay apnay hi rung mein rung lay,
Tu to saaheb mera Mehboob-e-Ilaahi;
Mohay apnay hi rung mein……
Humri chundariya, piyaa ki pagariya,
Woh to donon basanti rung day;
Tu to saaheb mera …….
Jo kuch mangay rung ki rungaai,
Mora joban girvi rakhlay;
Tu to saaheb mera…….
Aan pari darbaar tehaaray,
Mori laaj saram sab rakh lay;
Tu to saaheb mera Mehboob-e-Ilaahi,
Mohay apnay hi rung mein rung lay.

Tone me into a glow of thine
Thee my sir, are Allah's beloved
Dye me into a cast of thine
My scarf and the love's turban
Let both be flushed with the tint of spring
Thee my lord, are Allah's beloved
Whatever it may cost infusing the color
Loan it against all this bloom of mine
Thee my knight, are Allah's beloved
(now that) I have rolled in at thine court
Thou I ask to keep my honor and esteem
Thee my man, are Allah's beloved
Adorn me with that value of thine

Talaash-e-harf, Khayal-e-Faiz

More often than not all of us let our worlds revolve around activities that are related to the outside sphere, rather than concentrating upon the one that matters to the universe that exists within.
Unfortunately, whatever we find happening, happens in the EXTERNAL orbits, away from the electric field of the nucleus that is responsible to keep us charged. This just serves to dissociate us farther from our inner self. The happenings serve as the magical potion, the entrancing tranquilizer, which take us away from the turmoils of the self; far far away into a land of forgetful bliss, an island of beautiful sunrises and enchangting eves. The intoxicating rush of breaking away from the reality is so potent that like a speedy car of a drunken driver, it makes us loose our sense of direction and we dive straight into the realm of artificiality that we fondly call "the happening world".

However, the hangover of this treacherous lovemaking with the diva la-di-da leaves one battered like the Titanic. Then all what is left for the self to gloat in consists of a void so deepening that it swallows every thought into the black hole at its pit; words are  rendered speechless and fancy rotting to nothingness. All that is left is an echoing silence!

Aaj ek harf ko phir dhoondta phirta hai khayal
Madh bhara harf koi, zeher bhara harf koi

Dil-nashin harf koi, qeher bhara harf koi
Aaj ek harf ko phir dhoondta phirta hai khayal...

Today again my fancy seeks a word to soar
An intoxicating word,  a word brimming of venom
A word that bewitches, a word that is barbed
Today again my fancy seeks a word to soar...

Harf-e-ulfat koi dildar-e-nazar ho jaise

Jis’se milti hai nazar bosa-e-lab ki surat
Itna roshan ke sare-mauja-e-zar ho jaise
Sohbat-e-yaar main aghaaz-e-tarab ki surat
Harf-e-nafrat koi shamsheer-e-ghazab ho jaise,
Aaj ek harf ko phir dhoondta phirta hai khayal...

A word of desire like the enchanting beloved herself
Whose glance greets like a kiss on the lips
As radiant as the wavelet of a sea of gold
Like the hum of a ballad in the company of a lover
A word of spite that wounds like a vengeful sword
Today again my fancy seeks a word to soar...

Ta abad shahre-sitam jis’se tabah ho jayein
Itna tareeq ke shamshan ki shab ho jaise
Lab pe laoon to mere honth siyah ho jayein
Aaj ek harf ko phir dhoondta phirta hai khayal...

A word so potent to consume the rancor forever
A word so dark as the eve of a charnel
A word when uttered,  leaves my lips charred
Today again my fancy seeks a word to soar...

And So I Left Facebook..

"I believe this has been VERY biased and shamelessly blasphemous an act by the Facebook administration to not ban the group "Everybody Draw Muhammad Day". In addition to getting my protest registered in black and white, I am deactivating my Facebook account for the next couple of days. This status msg would stay here for a while so as to ask all others affected to join as well."

A few hours later, my Facebook account deactivation form bore this deactivation reason:

"I condemn Facebook for not banning the event of "Everybody Draw Muhammad". I am utterly disappointed in Facebook for explicitly associating itself with extremism and racial/(anti)religious fundamentalism, and that too, via the most heinous form of Freedom of Expression. Since Facebook, despite being a global 'social' networking site, has failed to control and ban things that are hurtful to my feelings and those of my nation,  I find it below my dignity and against my self respect to keep using it."

I wish there was more that I could do, in addition to asking for a 'dislike' button for a note shared at a friend's profile, and which read:
Please be patient and offer durood. Think of what the Prophet S.A.W. would have done. He would have smiled and forgiven them (the blasphemers) for their lack of understanding. Lets show the same tolerance as that of our beloved Prophet S.A.W. and stop participating in this useless condemnation.

I wonder how 'beloved' is this beloved? And is this the same cool display of patience they would have expressed had the target been one of their really loved ones?

Main hosh mein hoon, Abida Parveen

main hosh mein hoon hosh mein hoon, hosh mein hoon...
I am sane, in my senses, in my wakefulness

deewaana hoon to tera hoon
And to Thou still I belong in my craze

hoon raaz agar to tera hoon
If an untold secret, to Thou I belong

afsaana hoon to tera hoon,
If a myth narrated, I belong to Thee

barbaad kiya barbaad huva
Deserted by Thou, ruined I am

aabad kiya aabaad huva
Blessed by Thou,  salvaged I am

viraana hoon to tera hoon,
If bereft, to Thou I belong

tera kaashaana hoon to tera hoon,
If endowed, I belong to Thee

(iss teri tajjali ken kurbaan kurbaan-e tajjali har unava) -
main shamma bhi hoon to tera hoon
If a beacon I am, to Thou alone I belong

parwaana hoon to tera hoon,
If a seeker, I belong to Thee

tu mere kaif ki duniya hai -
From Thou I draw my serenity

tu meri masti ka aalam
In Thee I find my ecstasy

paimaana hoon to tera hoon -
If a chalice, to Thou I belong

maikhaana hoon to tera hoon,
If a tavern, I belong to Thee

har zarra Zaheen ki hasti ka
Each speck of Zaheen's humble self

tasveer hai teri sar-taa-pa
carries an image of Thou all over

woh kaabaa-e-dil dhaanewaale
Oh Thou who can raze the Kaaba shrine of heart

butkhaana hoon to tera hoon,
Even if am an idol temple, I belong to Thee

main hosh mein hoon to tera hoon
deewaana hoon to tera hoon
In my sanity, to Thou I belong,
in my madness I belong to Thee

Come September

Come September, the Rock Hudson version (there are 2 remakes), is one of the truly delightful movie experiences from my yester years. I remember my gleeful mum as she recalled her fond memories of her elder brother moving in and out of home humming this tune; her fondness of Rock Hudson, another factor in making this a special watch.

Heard this after years, and the simple joy that this lovely tune brings with it alongwith the gushing stream of images of some lovely and heart warming smiles just made me hum along. Wanna join? :)

It's gonna rain

It has been a pretty good weather for the last couple of days, for this time of the year. But still I am thrilled by this wind storm that is beginning to pick up. Its thrashing against the structures like a mad lover, crashing like an angry sea god. The wind hisses and wails alternatingly, talking of the happenings only it witnesses during its flow. Sobbing for the sorrows only carries within. The sturdy trunk braves the slapping wind with enviable dignity, while the weak branches sway with the force, grooving along the orchestra only a wild wind can play.

Its dusty. I close my eyes and decide to get back in. But my senses ask me to stop. Its turning moist. The dampness that is the gentle texture of the soothing shower which is going to subdue this mad lover, is slightly becoming detectable. Soon this hissing and wailing wind would be sighing of relief, gathered and collected within the moisture washing away its sorrows.

I stay on the terrace for I smell rain in this hurling cloak of dust.

The wait is over.

Choosing a turn.

Have you ever been at a cross section? Of course you have been. But how about being on the cross section where you are to choose between two of the available turns, and both are left. This LEFT or that LEFT! Yeah, thats when you don't have any RIGHT.

Life could be testing. For you? Are you sure?

A very captivating message that we tend to forget in the mundaneness of the day in day out life ......

Pal Pal ...

A lovely pahari folk song by Tahira Syed which is laden with the richness of softness that is so characteristic of the folk music.

I couldn't grasp the lyrics completely to put them down here for the benefit of readers, but the mood and the feeling isn't hard to capture. And how could it be any other way! the mellowness and softness and the ultimate sense of serene belonging that only some relation, deep relation, can allow makes it just relevant..

I remember talking about the richness of folk music with someone some eons ago, and what I realized for the first time was the pleasant discovery that the lavishness of tenderness with which folk music tickles ones senses is a result of the patient braving of the souls and traditions embedded in soil against the ravaging assaults of time.

Its a warm early evening. And the time and mood ask for some reconnecting with the self, roots, and everything in between .....

Enjoy your day ....

The pen broke, and the page was torn.

Do you see this man who has fallen asleep while we were talking? That  slumber is not a sign of heedlessness, but safety and security. Like a caravan travelling along a difficult and dangerous road on a dark night, they drive on in fear, lest harm should befall them. But as soon as the voice of a dog, or cock, reaches their ears and they and a village, they are carefree. They stretch out their legs and sleep sweetly. On the road, where not a sound or murmur would disturb them, they cannot sleep out of fear. But in the village they and security, and with all the barking of dogs and crowing of cocks, still they are happy and fall asleep.

Our words also derive from community and security, they are the sayings of prophets and saints. When soul hears the words of those familiar friends, it feels secure and is delivered from any fear, for upon these words is wafted a scent of hope and felicity.

Just as those travelers on that dark night think that every moment thieves are mingling with their caravan, so they desire to hear the words of their fellow travelers and to recognize them by their words. Once they hear their friends speak they feel secure. The same is true with you. Because your essence is subtle, glances are not enough for us, but if you speak we will then hear that familiar friend of our spirits and feel secure and at peace. So speak!

A certain mouse inhabiting a cornfield is invisible, being so small, but once it makes a sound, then people know it by means of its sound. And so, people are utterly immersed in the cornfield of this world, and your essence, being extremely subtle, is invisible. So speak, that they may recognize you.  When we long to see a certain place, our heart goes first to experience the conditions there. Then our heart returns and draws our body along. Now all the men and women of this world are like bodies in relation to the saints and the prophets, who are the heart of this world. These beings of the heart first journeyed to the other world, leaving their human attributes of flesh and skin. They surveyed the depths and heights of that world, and traversed all the stages, until they knew the way. Then they came back and summoned mankind, saying, “Come to that original world! For this world is a bleak and empty ruin compared to that garden we have discovered.”

From this you should realize that the heart is always attached to its beloved, and has no need to traverse the stages, no need to fear highwaymen, no need of the mule’s packsaddle. It is the wretched body that is tied to these things.

I said to my heart,

“How is it you are barred from the service
Of He whose name you bless?”
My heart replied,
“You misread the signs.
I am constantly in His service,
You are the one astray.”

Wherever you are, no matter what may happen, always strive to be a lover, a passionate lover. Once love has become your property you will be a lover eternally, in the grave, at the resurrection, or in Paradise, for ever and ever. When you have sown wheat, wheat will surely grow, stocks of wheat will fill the shed, loaves of wheat will fill the oven.

When Majnun wanted to write a letter to Laila, he took a pen in his hand and wrote:

Your name is on my tongue, Your image is within my sight, Your memory
fills my heart, Where, then, can I write?
Your image dwells in my sight, Your name never leaves my tongue,
Your memory occupies the depths of my soul, so where am I to write, see-
ing that You are here in all these places?

The pen broke, and the page was torn.

Many are those whose heart is full of such reality, but they cannot express the words in terms of speech. This is not surprising, and is no limit to that love. On the contrary, the root of the matter is the heart, yearning, and passion. A child is in love with milk, and from milk it derives succor and strength, yet the child cannot explain milk or describe it, saying, “What pleasure I and in drinking milk, and how weak and anguished I would be without it.” The child has no words for it, yet still it desires milk. Most grown people, on the other hand, even though they might describe milk in a thousand ways, still they and no such pleasure or delight in milk like they did as children.

Change of Times ...

And yet again, the night seemed like a story out of the Arabian Nights. One that descended onto the sky just to stay there forever; like a lover's sigh, like a gypsy's curse.
He thought and tried to concentrate on how life would be the next morning, under the new sun. But the blackness of the bleak night invaded his vision everytime his thought kissed the radiant face of a sunny morning.

With his eyes settled on the feeble new moon, his heart ached with the anxiety of the unforeseen, the fear of the unknown. He cursed not having read Tolestoy's complete collection. They said he wrote the best tragedies. Who knows, probably he belonged to them;  was merely a character out of any of those! His aching heart sank a little further and he averted his gaze, away from its feeble hanger.

What if tomorrow REALLY never comes? His mind asked as his sight grazed the gloomy sky seeking a trace of light. What if life is just a continuum, devoid of any yesterdays and tomorrows? What if the calendars and the ticking watches had all been invented by some clueless idle minds as a cheap ploy for the fools? What if time, 'the time', was merely a hoax? A virtual reality, with nothing real inside?
As his mind began to craze into actively dissociating itself from the reality, he heard his heart drumming into his ears. With each beat he could visualize his madness turning into a physical being, a being that surrounded him like a windowless death cell, over powering his senses, his sanity.

He winced over the strength of that mastering gloom, when suddenly his tired sheen-less eyes again traced the boundary of that forlorn soldier that was stripped off his shinning armor but was still battling the looming darkness in the vast expanse of the sky. His heart went out for it. And then like a bolt of lightening a realization hit him. Hit him hard. He looked intently at the moon, smiled and then looked at the sky, in the opposite direction. A little while from now, and the moon would no longer need to wage war against the darkness alone. The rising sun from the east would take care of it.

The rising sun from the east suddenly became a reality that asked to be believed in, just like that limitless expanse of black in front of his eyes. It became a reality almost touchable. He closed his eyes and hearing his drumming heart slowing down in his chest, felt the sky scrapper walls of his death cell crumbling down to a cloud of dust. His dry lips cracked into a smile filled with gratitude as he murmured, rendering his voice to the almost touchable reality whose realization had hit him like a bolt of lightening. "Seest thou not that Allah merges Night into Day And He merges Day into Night?"

Time was not a hoax after all. It was a reality more real than anything else. It was the Divine promise. It was the change. The Change.
His heart trembled with the raveling realization as he began to experience the change. The horizon towards the east bore a witness to the change.

It was the break of dawn.

yaad nigaar

23 weeks and 5 days .... 3984 hours ...... and a lifetime that slipped through in between.....

It was uncomfortable, awkward; but more than anything else ... Painful. PAINFUL.

Wish, we could have known people like we thought they were ..... why would they want to be what we couldnt ever believe them to be ......

Couldn't help but realize the utter dryness in this pair of eyes in contrast of those wet, red ones ...... couldn't help .........

This song became my favorite through the playlist that those ears were accustomed to listen to ...... couldn't help but recalling it ........

A White Wash

I dont know for what reason I recalled it, but feel like sharing it here.

As the story goes, Moses once asked God as to who was the most abominable man on earth of those times, since he wanted to see that who could be such a thankless being to such a bountiful Lord. God gave him the address. Moses went there and found the man's wife. He told her the purpose of his visit; the man's wife agreed that her husband had the every thinkable wickedness of character and vouched that it could only be him who could have been the most abominable man on earth.
The next day, Moses asked God as to who was the best man on earth of those times. God gave him the address, and to Moses' utter surprise it was the same address that he had been given the previous day. Nonetheless, he went there and found the man's wife again.
Startled as he was, he asked her if she had noticed any change in her husband's behaviour for such a bizarre change in status overnight! The lady said, 'After you left yesterday I waited for my husband and after he laid down to rest at night, I asked him, " O my master, what do you think is the greatest thing?" he said "elephant". I asked " and what is greater than even an elephant?" and he replied, "a whale". I asked "O my lord! what is bigger than even a whale?" and he said" the mountains, and rivers"; and I said "and what my lord could be bigger than even the mountains and seas?", at this he stopped and said "my vices". I stayed quiet for a while and not knowing how to close the conversation, asked him casually, "is there anything greater than even your vices?", a tear rolled down his cheek and he sobbed "Almighty's mercy!" ".
Moses returned back. He had got his answer.

Everything Happens to Me

This song by the maestro Sinatra is such an endearingly innocent expression that I instantly fell in love with it. It so truly reflects the irony of fate of someone that, at more often than not, is each one of us :)

Though right now I don't think any other thing than the lovely sky is blue, yet I can't help just relishing this number with an 'awww cuteeee!' :) And ABSOLUTELY not without an oozing sense of gratitude for everything that happens to me ;)

"Everything Happens to me"
Writer(s): Dennis/Adair

Black cats creep across my path
Until Im almost mad
I must have roused the devils wrath
'cause all my luck is bad

I make a date for golf – and you can bet your life it rains.
I try to give a party - but the guy upstairs complains.
I guess I'll go thru life just catching colds and missing trains;
Everything happens to me.

I never miss a thing - I've had measles and the mumps.
And every time I play my ace my partner always trumps.
I guess I'm just a fool who never looks before he jumps;
Everything happens to me.

At first my heart thought you could break this jinx for me.
That love would turn the trick to end despair.
But now, I just can't fool this head that thinks for me.
I've mortgaged all my castles in the air.

I telegraphed and phoned, sent an Air Mail Special, too;
You answer was goodbye - there was even postage due.
I fell in love just once, and then it had to be with you,
Everything happens to me.

I've never drawn a sweepstake, or a bank night at a show.
I thought perhaps this time I'd won, but Lady Luck said no.
And though it breaks my heart, I'm not surprised to see you go,
Everything happens to me,
Everything happens to me.

A Red Signal on Road

What follows is a mail that I wrote to an anonymous someone that I came across at an online-forum Chowk,  and with whom I shared nothing but an introduction of her entanglement in doubts: Devouring doubts. Devastating doubts. Demeaning doubts. DOUBTS.

There always are such times when every mark in life is a question mark; when every space is a blank space. In such times, when the space coordinate is of vacuum and the time coordinate of disillusionment, I am so glad to have stumbled across this manuscript while managing my drafts folder.

"

Life is a tough sport, and for some chosen ones it is tougher. The duration of time that we spend breathing, bears different extents of difficulties for each one of us. I understand that what you are going through is heart wrenchingly painful; and I pray to Lord that your endurance be your strength and may you pass this test of fate and time extremely courageously and gracefully.

If you dont mind, may I please suggest that incase you already do not, try rising early in the morning. Like 6ish in the morn. If you can have it, take a stroll at that time even if its ur balcony. Talk to Allah at that time. A candid heart-to-heart talk. Like you would talk to your bestest friend without any slightest trace of fear of being rejected, or any guilt. Talk to Him. In a few days you shall feel that He talks back to you too, for you shall inshaAllah feel the strain of pressure loosening in ur chest.

Worked wonders for me when I felt like a loner marooned on a forsaken island. Without any comparisons of circumstances of difficulty, I hope it does for you too.

Its not surprising that you think the way you do. Anyone in circumstances tough as yours could hardly do anything else.

I am no angel myself. I have had my doubts, still have at times. But guess what, every thing in the universe cant be captivated by the dictates of our logic, man believes universe just as much as he understands it. As in what you can not see, automatically gets ruled out of existence. Isn't it so? For centuries the earth remained flat cos man thought it to be so. It isn't anymore :)
This means we have to leave a few matters aside from the realm of 'existence is what I believe exists'. There might be actions-reactions and factors triggering these, that absolutely escape our mental mapping. Nonetheless they remain there.

You have found yourself losing, no wonder you attribute all your losses to Him. Does this imply that you do find Him the authority figure who controls the strings of your life? You do consider Him the responsible one of your life, dont you? :)

When there is a Controller of things, one has to contact Him if the settings need to be changed.

Have you ever ridden a boat? that desi oar-bot? The one that is driven by a mallaah. We do not know the guy, we feel unsettled in the turbulent waters, we freak out when the boat tumbles over the gushing waves, but we do not jump out of the boat. Why? because we know that he is the guy who shall steer us, we are his responsibility. Faith is like a sailing boat. Boats do drown at times and boat do wreck too, but till the journey lasts, till the destination is reached, the seeker needs the boat, to be able to sail through to the other end.

I am not completely aware of your circumstances, so I am afraid of being too ignorant to keep on going further. Also please forgive me if I have said anything that touched you on any raw nerve.

Hey, just curious, do you stop at red signal while on road?
If you do, do tell me why

"

I halt at red signal, and see the time slipping out of my hands, cursing having to stop while an errand waits to be done ..... but knowing all this time that this is the safety plan. Has to be this way.

I am trying to remind myself the same again.
