Wo azl say faqeer, jo muqaam-e-gadaee na jeet paey,
ye wussat-e-zeest kis qadar bekar musafat ho jaey....
ho jitna ik muflis ka makaan, jab kasaa-e-dil khali ho jaey .....
khudi kay sheesh mehal ka aseer, gayyaan-o-gumaan ho jaey....
tamaam umr ki ryazat, jab ik kaar-e-zayyan ho jaey ....
maangnay ko haath uthain, aur soat bay-bayan ho jaey....
jholi phailaen aur daman sirf chhaid reh jaey...
ander jo basta ho roohi, ashk kahan say aaey...
kia sitam ho kay sawali khud bhi daikh paey...
nafs ki wo sab siyahi, jo har dua ko nigal jaey....
Just some random blabbering! Has nothing to the do with the great kalam shared in the clips underneath, except for the sense of ...."mori bhi rung do chunariya..."

What a joyful rendition of Mirabai's bhajan.
Aisi rang de ke rang nahi choote
Dhobiya dhoyye chahe sari umariya
She was an amazing woman:

I love that Nusratji sings as woman (... puja karungi; ... mei daasi tumhari)!
Do you know who adopted this bhajan as a qawwali?
Glad you enjoyed.
Thanks for introducing to another classic.
I am clueless >> " Do you know who adopted this bhajan as a qawwali? "
Enlighten, please?
I don't know who adopted Meera's bhajan as a devotional qawwali, but whoever it was, they did a great job!
Obviously the main theme is the same: it is sung from the point of view of a woman (Mira) who asks (metaphorically) for:
(1) mori rang do chunariya
(color my scarf)
(2) aisi rang de ke rang nahi choote
(so the color doesn't come out)
(3) dhobiya dooye chahe ye sari umariya.
(even if the washerman washes it his whole life.)
The most obvious change is that Mira's bhajan is sung for Shyam, whereas the qawwali is sung for Baba.
But this is what is amazing: Nusratji actually sings (38 seconds into part 2)
http://youtu.be/PyFPP2LJ8hQ#t=38s
bal bal jauon tori kishan murari
phir se bajaun bansuria
baba mei tori puja karungi
And of course Shyam (kishan) is quite famous for his bansuria (flute). So with this stanza Nusratji (or whichever poet first adopted the bhajan) pays homage to Mirabai's original intention for the poem.
The qawwali does add a few new stanzas not found in the original (such as drinking matva), which are metaphors not commonly used in bhajans, but of course very common in qawwalis.
All in all, it's wonderful to see that devotion can be so universal. For in the end, no matter which version of the Ultimate Inspiration the prayer is sung for, the music remains divine.

Here is Nusratji singing another of Meera's bhajans, Sanson Ki Mala Pe Simroon Main Pi Ka Naam
"sanson ki mala pe" is too special for me for a couple of reasons. Thanks for sharing it, for I wouldn't have shared it on this blog... :) kabhi laga nahi kay attachment justify ho paey gi :)
^ shayad kisi din hamme bhi is geet ka kahani sunaoge :) until then, uski translation, apke liye:
aa piya in nainan mein mei palk damp tohe loon
come my dear, let me catch a glimpse of you in my eyes
na mei dekhun ghair ko na mei tohe dekhan dun
neither do i look at others, nor do i let you look either
nil gagan se bhi parre sayanji ka gaon
past even the blue sky is my love's village
darshan jal ki kamna path rakhiyo, hai ram
keep me on the path that desires your vision, o Raam
jab se radha shyam ke nain huye hai chaar
ever since Radha and Shyam's eyes became four
shyam banne hai radhika radha ban gaye shaam
Shyam became Radha and Radha became Shyam
ab kismat ke haath hai is bandhan ki laaj
now it is in Providence's hands, this bond's honor
meine tho maan likhdiya, savariya ke naam
for I have written to heart, my love's name
vo chaatar hai kamni, voh hai sundar naar
that ho is clever, that woman gorgeous
jis pagli ne kar diya sajan ka man ram
that crazy girl who turned her lover's heart to Raam
sason ki mala pe simruh mei pi ka naam
on a rosary of breaths i string His name
apne maan ke mei janu aur pi ke maan ke raam
my heart i know and His heart Raam knows
sason ki mala pe simruh mei pi ka naam
on a rosary of breaths i string His name
ik ka saajan mandir mei aur ik ka pritam masjid mei
one's beloved in a temple and another's lover in a mosque
sason ki mala pe simruh mei pi ka naam
on a rosary of breaths i string His name
prem ka raang mei aisi dubi, ban gaya ek hi roop
so immersed in love's color, i became one form
prem ki mala japthe japthe, aap bani mei shaam
love's rosary chanting, chanting, i myself became Shyam
sason ki mala pe simruh mei pi ka naam
on a rosary of breaths i string His name
pritam ka kuch dosh nahi hai, voh tho hai nirdosh
my dear is not at all at fault, He is blameless
apne aap se bathein karke ho gaye mei badnam
just talking to myself, i became notorious
sason ki mala pe simruh mei pi ka naam
on a rosary of breaths i string His name
